Catholic Affirmations For Mamas

Here’s your monthly mental health post!

Affirmations. To some, this word brings skepticism. To others, this word doesn’t mean much. The question is, what does it mean to Catholics and is it true?

To keep you from getting bored, I’ll be really succinct on the scientific portion of this. In a nutshell, research demonstrates a strong connection between the mind and the body. Whatever you do to your body, affects your mind. And whatever you do to your mind, affects your body.

Now, where do affirmations fit it?

Affirmations replace negative thought patterns with healthier thoughts and beliefs. In fact, by focusing on healthier thoughts and affirming your core values, affirmations help an individual have a productive response to challenging situations¹.

People who practice affirmations tend to have increased self-worth and confidence, and less stress on the mind and body. A natural byproduct of affirmations is a reduction in the production of cortisol, your body’s main stress hormone. High levels of cortisol have been associated with different types of mental and physical problems, like sleep issues, anxiety, weight gain, digestive issues, etc².

Now, to the fun part – what does the Bible say about this?

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Philippians 4:8

Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect. Romans 2:12

If then you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Think of what is above, not of what is on earth. Colossians 3:1-2

As Catholics, we’re called to set our minds on Christ — to trust in Him and to surrender to Him. Easier said than done; yet, affirmations can help center ourselves in the Truth on days when we need that extra support.

The purpose of Catholic affirmations are not to inflate our egos, but rather center us in the Truth.

I don’t about you, but I have hard days. I have days where I don’t check my mind, and if my mind is left unchecked, it more often than not leads me to despair…and that’s where affirmations come in. Affirmations ground me on those tough days.

It’s important to keep in mind that in some cases, affirmations can do more harm than good. God doesn’t call us to live in toxic positivity; He call us to be honest with him. This is a case-by-case situation, and only you can determine whether or not you’re in a season of life where affirmations can help you.

With that being said, here are 10 Catholic affirmations for mamas. I hope this uplifts you in a special way today!
